“What is Technical Analysis and should I take the time to learn it?”

Well, let’s first discuss Technical Analysis. As defined in wikipedia, Technical analysis is a security analysis discipline for forecasting the future direction of prices through the study of past market data, primarily price and volume. Ok, so what does that mean? Well, Technical analysis “ignores” the actual nature of the company, market, currency or commodity and is based solely on “the charts,” or price and volume information. This stands in contrast to fundamental analysis that does look at the actual facts of the company, market, currency or commodity (which I will describe in another post later.

Technical analysis is based on three assumptions:

1.     The market discounts everything.
2.     Price moves in trends.
3.     History tends to repeat itself.

So, instead of trying to determine whether a company is a good investment, technical analysts are trying to predict what the stock is going to do based on patterns they find in charts. I will be doing a full examination of different charting strategies in later posts. But, to answer whether or not you should learn technical analysis is a personal preference. I started out only focusing on value investing and fundamental analysis, but quickly realized that if you don’t have an arsenal of trading strategies in your coffers, then you are going to miss out on many opportunities that present themselves. In this market downturn, if you were just a buy and hold type of investor, you would not have done so well. On the other hand, over 90% of “trader’s” fail because you can’t predict people’s emotions.
